What changed this year
Recent rate, bracket and threshold changes from IRD and the relevant authorities.
PAYE thresholds raised
The lower four bracket thresholds were lifted for the first time since 2010. The 17.5% bracket now starts at NZD 15,600 and the 30% bracket at NZD 53,500.
IRD2026–27 tax year began
The New Zealand tax year runs 1 April to 31 March. The 39% top rate above NZD 180,000 (in effect since 1 April 2021) continues to apply.
IRDACC earner levy increased to 1.75%
The ACC earner levy rate rose from 1.67% to 1.75% for the 2026–27 levy year, applied to income up to the annual cap.
IRDKiwiSaver employer rate stepped up to 3.5%
The employer KiwiSaver matching minimum rose to 3.5% (and to 4% from 1 April 2028) as part of the legislated step-up schedule.
