The CPF Basic Retirement Sum (BRS) is the lower of the CPF retirement sum tiers set aside in the Retirement Account at age 55, providing monthly payouts for basic living needs in retirement.

Key takeaways

  • The BRS for members turning 55 in 2026 is SGD 110,200.
  • The BRS is half the Full Retirement Sum.
  • Members who own a property can set aside the BRS and withdraw savings above it, subject to conditions.
  • BRS savings fund CPF LIFE monthly payouts from the payout eligibility age of 65.
  • The BRS is set for each cohort in the year they turn 55 and does not change afterwards.

How the Basic Retirement Sum works

At age 55, a member’s Retirement Account is measured against the BRS. Members who own a property of sufficient value can set aside the BRS — held in cash and property — rather than the Full Retirement Sum, and may withdraw Retirement Account savings above the BRS, subject to CPF Board conditions.

BRS, FRS and ERS

The BRS is the lowest of the three retirement sum tiers. The Full Retirement Sum is double the BRS, and the Enhanced Retirement Sum is four times the BRS. Higher tiers fund higher CPF LIFE payouts.

How the sum changes each year

The retirement sums are revised each year and apply to the cohort turning 55 that year. The sum that applies to a member is fixed in the year they turn 55.

Worked example

A member turning 55 in 2026 who owns a property may set aside the Basic Retirement Sum of SGD 110,200 and, subject to CPF Board conditions, withdraw Retirement Account savings above that amount. The BRS then funds CPF LIFE payouts from age 65.
