The payout eligibility age (PEA) is the age from which a CPF member can start receiving retirement monthly payouts. For members born in 1954 or later it is 65, and payouts can start any time from 65 to 70; earlier birth years have PEAs between 60 and 64. CPF Board says the PEA is not linked to the retirement or re-employment age; under the Retirement and Re-employment Act these are 64 (for those born on or after 1 July 1963) and 69 from 1 July 2026 (MOM).

Key takeaways

  • CPF Board defines the payout eligibility age as the age from which a member can start receiving retirement monthly payouts. For members born in 1954 or later it is 65, and monthly payouts can start any time between 65 and 70. For earlier birth years it is 64 for those born in 1952 and 1953, 63 for 1950 and 1951, 62 for 1944 to 1949 and 60 for those born before 1944.
  • CPF Board says the PEA is not linked to the retirement or re-employment age, so it is not affected by the 2026 change to Singapore’s retirement age; in a clarification dated 19 January 2019 it said the PEA of 65 for members born from 1954 onwards was announced in 2007 and had not changed. Under the Retirement and Re-employment Act, MOM’s minimum retirement age is 64 from 1 July 2026 for Singapore Citizens and PRs born on or after 1 July 1963 (62 for those born 1 July 1958 to 30 June 1960, 63 for 1 July 1960 to 30 June 1963), and the re-employment age rose from 68 to 69 from the same date.
  • Instructions to start monthly payouts can be submitted from three months before the month the member turns 65, up to age 70, through CPF Board’s Plan My Monthly Payouts service, and CPF Board sends a notification three months before the member turns 65. CPF Board does not start payouts automatically at the PEA, as it does not assume every member wants to start then; CPF savings earn interest of up to 6% a year, so the later payouts start, the larger the RA grows. If no instructions are submitted by 70, payouts start automatically in the month of the 70th birthday, and a CPF LIFE member who has not chosen a plan is put on the Standard Plan.
  • For CPF LIFE, CPF Board says monthly payouts rise by up to 7% for each year the start is deferred, depending on gender and CPF LIFE plan, and by up to 35% if deferred to 70. In its 7 August 2026 example, a 55-year-old male on the CPF LIFE Standard Plan with SGD 220,400 in his RA can receive SGD 2,380 a month by starting at 70, compared with SGD 1,780 from 65: SGD 600 more a month. CPF LIFE payouts, including any Additional Monthly Payouts, must start by 70 at the latest, and members not on CPF LIFE cannot defer beyond 70 either; for them, deferring gives higher payouts or a longer payout duration.
  • Singapore Citizens and PRs born in 1958 or after with at least SGD 60,000 in retirement savings when payouts start are included in CPF LIFE automatically; other Citizens and PRs can choose to join CPF LIFE any time from 65 to one month before turning 80, although monthly payouts themselves must start by 70. Members who are not on CPF LIFE receive monthly payouts that stop when their savings run out. This covers members born before 1958, and those born in 1958 or after with less than SGD 60,000 in retirement savings when payouts start, unless they have joined CPF LIFE, as well as members who are not Citizens or PRs. These payouts are calculated to last up to 20 years from the PEA at the RA interest rate prevailing when payouts start; extra interest of up to 2% a year is used to extend them, up to age 90. Members born before 1958 are already past their PEA and can start payouts at any time.

What is the payout eligibility age?

CPF Board defines it as the age from which a member can start receiving retirement monthly payouts. Reaching it opens a window; it does not start the payouts.

Born 1954 or laterage 65Monthly payouts can start any time from 65 to 70. Earlier birth years have PEAs between 60 and 64.
Instructions from3 monthsBefore the month of turning 65, through the Plan My Monthly Payouts service. CPF Board sends a notification three months before 65.
Automatic startat 70If no instructions are submitted by 70, payouts start in the month of the 70th birthday. CPF Board does not start them at the PEA.

CPF Board says the PEA is not linked to the retirement or re-employment age, and that payouts remain available from the PEA even if those ages are raised. In a clarification dated 19 January 2019 it said the PEA of 65 for members born from 1954 onwards was announced in 2007 and had not changed.

Payouts from 65SGD 1,780
Payouts from 70SGD 2,380

CPF Board’s example (7 August 2026) for a 55-year-old male on the CPF LIFE Standard Plan; one profile, not a rule. CPF Board says the yearly increase is up to 7% and depends on gender and CPF LIFE plan. By Money Snap’s arithmetic, SGD 2,380 is about 34% more than SGD 1,780, within CPF Board’s “up to 35%”.

What it means for you

Where the payout eligibility age shows up

MOM’s minimum retirement age is 64 for those born on or after 1 July 1963, a year below the PEA of 65. CPF Board says the PEA is not linked to the retirement or re-employment age. Employers must offer re-employment up to 69 to eligible employees: Singapore Citizens or PRs with satisfactory work performance, as assessed by the employer, who are medically fit to continue working and, if hired at 55 or above, have served the current employer for at least 2 years before turning 64.

Instructions can be submitted from three months before the month of turning 65. For members born in 1958 or after who have not reached the FRS when payouts start, Ordinary Account savings are moved to the RA automatically, up to the FRS, one week before payouts start. When CPF LIFE payouts start, CPF Board deducts the premium for the chosen plan from the RA one week before the start date, and the premium continues to earn CPF interest.
Starting later than 65CPF LIFE plan comparator
CPF LIFE payouts rise by up to 7% for each year the start is deferred, depending on gender and CPF LIFE plan, and by up to 35% at 70. CPF Board notes CPF savings earn interest of up to 6% a year, so the RA grows while payouts wait. For members not on CPF LIFE, deferring gives higher payouts or a longer payout duration.
Withdrawing from 65Full Retirement Sum
Members can withdraw any amount from the Ordinary Account if they have set aside the FRS, or up to SGD 5,000 if not. Members born in 1957 or after may also withdraw an additional amount of RA savings; CPF Board says it depends on birth year and RA savings at 65, and generally excludes cash top-ups, CPF transfers and government grants.
Not on CPF LIFECPF interest rates
Monthly payouts stop when the savings run out. They are calculated to last up to 20 years from the PEA, based on the RA interest rate prevailing when payouts start, and extra interest of up to 2% a year is used to extend them, up to age 90. Singapore Citizens and PRs not automatically included can join CPF LIFE from 65 to one month before turning 80.

CPF Board says the PEA of 65 is not linked to the retirement or re-employment age and is not affected by the 2026 change, when MOM’s minimum retirement age became 64 (for those born on or after 1 July 1963) and the re-employment age 69.
CPF payouts start automatically at 65.
