The CPF MediSave Account (MA) is the Central Provident Fund account reserved for healthcare costs and approved medical insurance premiums, such as MediShield Life.

Key takeaways

  • MA savings earn a floor interest rate of 4% p.a., extended until 31 December 2026.
  • MA balances can be used for hospitalisation, approved outpatient treatments, and MediShield Life and CareShield Life premiums.
  • The Basic Healthcare Sum (BHS) — the maximum a member can hold in the MA — is SGD 79,000 in 2026 for members below age 65.
  • The BHS for members who turn 65 in 2026 is fixed at SGD 79,000 and does not change afterwards.
  • Savings above the BHS flow to the Special or Retirement Account, or to the Ordinary Account.

How the MediSave Account works

A share of each CPF contribution is allocated to the MA under the CPF Board’s age-based rates. The MA meets approved healthcare costs and insurance premiums, and its balance earns the long-term floor interest rate.

The Basic Healthcare Sum (BHS)

The BHS is the maximum balance a member can keep in the MA. It is SGD 79,000 in 2026 for members below age 65 and is adjusted each year for that group. For members who turn 65 in a given year, the BHS is then fixed for the rest of their life — SGD 79,000 for those turning 65 in 2026. Contributions that would take the MA above the BHS are channelled to the Special or Retirement Account, or to the Ordinary Account.

What MediSave can be used for

  • Hospitalisation and approved day surgery
  • MediShield Life and approved Integrated Shield Plan premiums
  • CareShield Life or ElderShield premiums
  • Approved outpatient treatments and chronic disease management
