The CPF Special Account (SA) is the Central Provident Fund account for retirement savings held by members below age 55, and its savings earn a higher floor interest rate than the Ordinary Account.
Key takeaways
- SA savings earn a floor interest rate of 4% p.a., extended until 31 December 2026 — higher than the OA’s 2.5% p.a.
- The SA is for members below age 55; part of each CPF contribution is allocated to it under the CPF Board age-based rates.
- From 19 January 2025, the Special Account was closed for members aged 55 and above.
- On closure at 55, SA savings were transferred to the Retirement Account up to the Full Retirement Sum, with any remainder moved to the Ordinary Account.
- Extra interest of 1% p.a. on the first SGD 60,000 of combined balances also applies to SA savings.
How the Special Account works
The SA holds CPF savings set aside for retirement for members below age 55. A share of each monthly CPF contribution is allocated to the SA according to the CPF Board’s age-based allocation rates, and the balance earns the long-term floor interest rate.
Interest on SA balances
SA savings earn a floor rate of 4% p.a., which the Government has extended until 31 December 2026, compared with 2.5% p.a. on the OA. An extra 1% p.a. is paid on the first SGD 60,000 of a member’s combined balances.
Closure of the Special Account at age 55
From 19 January 2025, the SA was closed for members aged 55 and above. Their SA savings were transferred to the Retirement Account up to the Full Retirement Sum, where they continue to earn the long-term interest rate; any remaining SA savings were transferred to the Ordinary Account, which earns 2.5% p.a.
